List Randomizer

A shuffled list can reduce order bias in surveys, rotate tasks or put names into an unpredictable sequence. You can also select a specified number of entries from the submitted list.

Enter one item per line. Choose whether to trim spaces, remove blank lines or remove duplicates before randomisation.

Randomness

The tool uses the browser’s Web Crypto generator and an unbiased Fisher-Yates shuffle. This produces stronger randomness than Math.random(), which the previous version used.

A random result does not create an auditable prize draw on its own. Formal competitions may require published rules, eligibility checks, a recorded selection process and evidence that organisers did not change the entrant list.

Duplicate entries

Keep duplicates when repeated entries represent valid additional chances. Remove duplicates when each distinct line should appear only once. Duplicate matching is exact after optional trimming, so “Alex” and “alex” remain separate entries.

Privacy

The list stays in your browser. The plugin does not submit names or other entries to WordPress or another service.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tool randomise a list?

It uses the browser’s cryptographic random-number generator to drive a Fisher-Yates shuffle. Rejection sampling prevents the small selection bias that can occur when random integers are mapped to list positions incorrectly.

Can I use it to select competition winners?

It can select random entries from a final entrant list, but it does not provide an independent audit record. Check the competition rules and any legal requirements, preserve the original entrant list, and record the selection when accountability matters.

Should I remove duplicate entries?

Remove duplicates when every person or item should receive one chance. Keep them when repeated lines are intentional, such as a draw in which qualifying actions earn additional entries.

Does the tool treat uppercase and lowercase names as duplicates?

No. Duplicate removal uses exact matching after optional space trimming. This prevents the tool from silently merging people or identifiers that differ only by case.

How many entries can I add?

The input accepts up to 200,000 characters, which covers many practical lists. Very large results can still place pressure on a mobile browser, so split unusually large datasets into manageable groups.

Can I download the randomised list?

Yes. The download contains the displayed result as a plain-text file. You can choose numbered output before shuffling or selecting entries.

Are names uploaded or stored?

No. Parsing, randomisation, selection, copying and file creation all happen in the browser. Avoid entering personal information that you do not need for the task.
